Think about "what sells" by season — a product selection guide for the China import business
"What should I source?" is the first wall every China import business hits. One answer: choose products by season. Japanese buying behavior follows a clear seasonal rhythm, and best-sellers move along with it.
China is the world's largest manufacturing base, so seasonal products are available in overwhelming variety and volume. Products for Japanese events (Halloween, Christmas, etc.) are mass-produced in China much earlier in the year.
Start sourcing 2–3 months before your target selling season. Work backwards from the lead time: production, shipping, inspection, and listing. Remember that Chinese factories close around the Spring Festival (Lunar New Year) — plan January–February orders especially carefully.
Spring concentrates demand for new-life, entrance/graduation, and gift occasions.
Production of spring goods in Zhejiang and Guangdong starts in winter, with inventory appearing by January. Source between December and January to be in time.
Summer is all about heat relief and leisure. China's "summer products" are diverse and cost-effective.
Careful: electric products such as handheld fans and neck coolers require PSE/Giteki checks (especially battery-powered items). Waterproof cases and floaties are prone to quality complaints — inspect thoroughly.
Autumn combines Halloween — now a major event in Japan — with preparation for the year-end sales season.
Ideal timing: complete Halloween sourcing by August. Halloween goods ship from China from July, and popular items sell out by September.
Winter is the biggest sales season of the year: Christmas, New Year, and Valentine's Day in sequence.
Start Christmas sourcing in September–October. Chinese factories peak production in October, but as the Spring Festival holiday (late January–February) approaches, production and shipping stop — finish ordering by mid-January to be safe.
| Sourcing period | Target season | Main products |
|---|---|---|
| Jan–Feb | Spring (Mar–May) | Doll Festival, entrance, GW, Mother's Day items |
| Apr–May | Summer (Jun–Aug) | Heat relief, festival, beach items |
| Jul–Aug | Autumn (Sep–Nov) | Halloween, autumn apparel, outdoor items |
| Sep–Oct | Winter (Dec–Feb) | Christmas, New Year, Valentine's items |
・Small-lot orders timed to the sourcing season (individuals and side businesses welcome)
・Category-by-category compliance checks (PSE, Giteki, Food Sanitation Law)
・Photo inspection reports prevent defects before the season
・International shipping (air/sea) arranged to match lead times
・No monthly fee, transparent pricing
Product selection in China sourcing is about asking "what will sell in 2–3 months," not "what sells now." Following the seasonal calendar keeps you on top of best-sellers while controlling inventory risk.
